Auerspergstraße 6, 5020 Salzburg, Österreich - from September 28th to September 30th, 2025 will take place in the Salzburg Congress of the 21. Salzburg Europe Summit 2025 under the motto " Europe and hope ". The event, which will attract over 60 top-class speakers from all over Europe, will deal with important topics such as migration, EU expansion as well as energy and supply security. Demographic change in Europe will also play a central role, a topic that is not only discussed in Salzburg, but is already considered urgent across Europe. Chancellor Christian Stocker will be among the prominent participants, together with representatives from the EU and leading heads from the economy, such as CEO Andreas Klauser from Palfinger AG and former heads of government such as Jan-Peter Balken end.
Demographic change is one of the greatest challenges in front of Europe. The EU Commission has emphasized that adaptation to the aging population and migration is imperative. In the past 50 years, life expectancy in the EU has increased by 10 years, which leads to new demands on social and economic strategies. A green book about aging is intended to initiate a public debate about the effects of this change, with 30% of the EU population lived in rural areas, which make up 80% of the Union. Initiatives such as the European youth guarantee obliges the Member States to offer young people under 30 years of age after unemployment or training.
strategies for coping with demographic change
In order to fight the demographic imbalance, the Commission calls on the Member States to develop and implement holistic strategies. These should be tailored to local conditions and support both the younger generations and create a framework for older generations. Mobilization required skills on the job market will be of the utmost importance. A pilot project is also started with Ukrainian refugees to promote social cohesion and address the shortage of skilled workers.
Dubravka Šuica, Vice President of the EU Commission for Democracy and Demography, emphasizes that demographic change requires an integrated approach. The Commission already supports Member States with legal, political and financial instruments to master the challenges. A Eurobarometer survey shows that 70% of Europeans see demographic developments as a threat to the economic prosperity of the EU. The decline in the population of the age -capable age is considered extremely critical, while the lack of measures could lead to further aging and shrinking of the population.
The upcoming political discussions at the Salzburg Europe Summit will respond to these questions and place the basics for future solutions. It is important to find integrated solutions in order to enable the EU to sustainably and future -oriented politics. EU financing instruments such as the building and resilience facility and the European Social Fund+ are also available for this.
As the Commission emphasizes, the challenges of demographic change are not to be considered in isolation, but must be incorporated into all political decisions. Only through the active participation of all social actors can it be possible to make Europe fit for the challenges of the coming decades. The debates in Salzburg should therefore not only be exciting, but also crucial for the future of Europe.
