Rewe boss demands: Longer opening times for supermarkets in Austria!

The managing director of Rewe Austria, Marcel Haraszti, has started a courageous initiative: he demands the increase in supermarket opening times from currently 72 to 80 hours a week. This would benefit the customers in Austria, while Sunday as a rest day continues, also in the popular tourism areas. Haraszti refers to the current opening times as "nostalgic nonsense", which does not meet modern needs, as flexibility for self -service boxes

In addition to the longer opening times, Haraszti advocates a completely liberal handling of the opening times of self -service boxes. At the moment they can only be open as long as traditional supermarkets; Haraszti considers this to be a hindrance, especially in rural areas, where around 580 communities are without their own local suppliers. A flexible regulation could significantly improve the supply in these areas. This information was also taken up by noe.orf.at

Haraszti also criticizes the negative public perception of trade, especially in times of the inflation crisis. He demands more recognition for the industry, which secures around 620,000 jobs in Austria. He also emphasizes the growing demand for organic and regional products as well as the upcoming challenges through the introduction of disposable deposit systems. Despite the hard competition in the food trade, it is optimistic and sees great potential, especially in the area of Click & Collect and in cooperation with delivery services. Rewe has already invested millions in the necessary infrastructure.
