René Benko: No interest in work in prison - everyday life behind bars!

Since January 23, 2025, René Benko's life, the former star of the real estate industry, is under the walls of the Josefstadt judgment. The founder of Signa spends his days into custody, and a rapid release seems doubtful. Despite an abundance of job opportunities in prison, the ex-billionaire decided not to work and uses his time to study intensive his legal situation with his lawyers. The focus on his defense limits his leisure activities, because conversations fill the morning and leave no time for easier tasks such as vegetables or work in the kitchen, as the "crown" reports.

The 47-year-old lives in a video monitored single cell on the ground floor, colloquially referred to as "basement". Benko apparently has a very withdrawn everyday life between the reception of cold dinner between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. and the occasional contact with Mitinsassen. While other prisoners use the opportunity to do sports in the Josefstadt prison, Benko practices yoga in his cell in the afternoon. Fitness devices are available, but contact with other inmates remains limited, which underlines its previously isolated state, as "OE24" lists.

On February 27, the pre -trial detention was extended by another two months, with another detention date due to April 28 at the latest. The accusation against Benko includes, among other things, the forgery of invoices and the attempt to hide assets from the authorities. These allegations and the associated investigations by the economic and corruption prosecutor could have serious consequences for the future of the once prominent real estate entrepreneur. In the meantime, German authorities are also investigating him because his company experienced a drastic decline in 2023.
