The government is faced with mammoth task: 18 billion euros savings by 2032!

In Austria, the government is under pressure to consolidate the budget, and that means massive cuts. FPÖ and ÖVP presented a “strike list” that already provides for savings of over 18 billion euros at the end of the election campaign. On Thursday, the two parties announced in a press conference that they would like to save a total of around 18 billion euros by 2025. In the first year alone, 6.3 billion euros have to be raised, which is a huge challenge. One of the most controversial measures is to abolish the climate monus, which is to flush around 2 billion euros in the state treasury. In addition to the increase in the retirement age by 150 million euros, the educational leave is also abolished, which should bring in another 350 million euros, so reported Today.at .

The targeted savings also affect the fees for official documents: from July 2025, citizens have to pay more for passports, driver's licenses and other certificates, since these fees have not been adjusted since 2011. This will bring 65 million euros to the state treasury this year. But the criticism of the plans cannot be ignored. Both the NEOS and representatives of other parties warn that mere cuts are not sufficient without comprehensive reforms in order to sustainably improve Austria's financial situation.
