Rapid chase in Lower Austria ends spectacularly in the crash!

Wien, Österreich - On May 20, 2025, a dramatic chase occurred in Vienna and Lower Austria, which kept the police force in suspense. A 29-year-old Croatian citizen from the Neunkirchen district was suspected of having committed several thefts of fuel, predatory theft and documents. The Stockerau motorway inspection discovered a suspicious vehicle with stolen license plates in an underground car park in Vienna.

The driver, when the police wanted to address him, broke through the barrier system of the underground car park and fled with excessive speed. The escape led over the Handelskai and the north bridge as well as on the A22 and S1 motorways towards German-Wagram. Despite several attempts to stop at the police, the driver was unimpressed.

rapid escape and spectacular ending

The persecution finally ended on the S1 when the driver lost control of his vehicle and collided with a police vehicle. As a result, the escape vehicle overturned, which luckily did not result in any injuries. The driver was temporarily arrested and was confessed. At the order of the Korneuburg public prosecutor's office, he was brought to the judiciary, while the investigation into other possible crimes continuing.

In parallel to this incident, there were other corners with frenzied drivers in Austria who employed the police. A driver with a Croatian license plate on the A9 tried to avoid traffic control. The latter initially steered his vehicle behind the patrol car on the delay strip, in order to then surprisingly turn left and to flee towards Graz at high speed. In doing so, he carried out risky overtaking maneuvers and got into blocked construction site areas, where he caused collisions with concrete guides.

When he escaped, the driver drove through the construction site area of the Ottsdorf tunnel, where a tire finally loosened from the rim and the vehicle came to a standstill shortly before the tunnel exit. Three young men, the inmates of the car, then jumped out of the car and escaped into an adjacent forest area, but were used by the police, which was used with 13 stripes and a helicopter.

security situation and crime statistics

The incidents throw a light on the current security situation in Austria. According to the Federal Criminal Police Office, police crime statistics (PKS) shapes the image of crime in the country by capturing all the cases indicated and documents the development of the criminal event. These statistics are used to plan strategic criminal police measures and to optimize the fight against crime.

The PKS is an indispensable tool to react to social changes and legal adjustments. Annual security reports offer detailed insights into trends and developments in crime, whereby the last updates took place on April 22, 2025.

The incidents of May 20 and those on the A9 illustrate the challenges that the police are facing in their daily work. The rapid escape and the associated risks must be taken seriously in order to continue to ensure security on the streets.
