Parliament plans drastic savings: budget in 2025 decreases by € 28.2 million!
Wien, Österreich - The budget committee of the National Council started on June 4, 2025, the detailed consultations for the double budget for the years 2025 and 2026. In this context, the parliamentary budget for 2025 decreases by 28.2 million euros, which corresponds to a decrease of 9 percent and reduces the budget to 284.8 million euros. This corresponds to 0.2 percent of the total payments of the parliament. For 2026, a further decline of EUR 2.4 million (0.9 percent) is expected to 282.4 million euros, while the income is around 2.3 million euros in both years.
This decline in the payments for 2025 results primarily from the renovation of the parliamentary building, for which -29.8 million euros, as well as from lower means for the National Fund, whose budget drops by 10.6 million euros. Savings in parliamentary management were also decided. These concern construction projects (11 million euros), IT projects (8 million euros), security and cleaning costs (1.9 million euros) as well as public relations and events (1.2 million euros).
savings and budget adjustments
The planned savings are not affected by MPs and parliamentary clubs. It is amazing that the budget for the parliamentary directorate in 2025 will increase by 7.1 million euros (4.4 percent) to just under 166 million euros before it drops by EUR 2.7 million (1.6 percent) to EUR 163.3 million in 2026. In 2024, over 560,000 visitors were already counted in parliament, with more than 13,000 guided tours.
In order to save cleaning costs, half a closing day will also be introduced on Monday. The costs for the youth parliament and the apprentice parliament, which amount to 25,000 euros or 36,000 euros, are not incurred for the participants. A workshop module against anti-Semitism is also to be revised and provided again until the turn of the year. The funds for events will be reduced from 450,000 euros to around 240,000 euros.
European financing strategy
The Commission has submitted a proposal for a national plan to implement the MFR, which was, however, rejected. Instead, a structure is required that guarantees transparency and parliamentary control, while joint investments are required to cope with crises. In addition, two special instruments for disaster relief and unforeseen challenges in the next household should be included, and planned repayments from Nextgenerationu should not endanger the financing of central EU priorities.
goals and administrative structure of the EU budget
The EU budget, which comprises a total amount of around 2 trillion euros between 2021 and 2027, provides expenditure for many essential areas to help the member states. This includes the creation of jobs, climate protection and improving the infrastructure. The management of the budget takes place in a mixed structure: 56 percent of the funds are jointly managed by national authorities and the Commission, while 37 percent are managed directly by the Commission.
Overall, the current budget situation shows the pressure on both national and European levels that arise from economic and social challenges. While national households are implementing austerity measures, the European Parliament also demands a more ambitious house situation that is able to meet the requirements of citizens in times of crisis. The next proposal for a long-term EU budget will be presented in July 2025.
The need to promote both efficiency and transparency will continue to be of central importance in both the national and the EU budget.
