Olympia 2026: Austria's big ticket demand and logistical challenges!
Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italien - The preparations for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo are in full swing. The Austrian Olympic Committee (ÖOC) is planning a strong presence in five of the six competition clusters, with an estimated number of 110 to 125 domestic athletes. ÖOC President Horst Nussbaumer and Secretary General Florian Gosch visited Cortina to find out more on site and to have discussions about the Austria house that is probably established in Cortina. This house should represent a central platform for business, politics, athletes and media, even if the final decision about the location is still pending, but this is supported by positive conversations.
There are six competition centers in total, including Cortina d’Ampezzo, Milan, Bormio, Antholz, Predazzo and Livigno. It is particularly noteworthy that Austria will not be represented in ice hockey. However, participation in curling and short track is still open. While a small team will be in Milan, it is completed that a strong presence is sought in the other clusters. The logistical challenge for accommodation, transport and the overall institutional coordination is at the top of the agenda of the ÖOC.
ticket sales and great demand
Another aspect of the preparations is ticket sales for the games. The official sale started on February 6, 2025 and will be opened for everyone on April 8th at 10 a.m. Each buyer can purchase up to 25 digital tickets on the official ticket platform, and Visa is the preferred payment method. Tickets are nominative for the buyer and their guests, although changes to the names are possible free of charge from December 2025 via the ticketing app.
Ticket requirements for the Winter Olympics is enormous, especially at the Alpine competitions in Cortina. Almost 300,000 tickets were sold in the first six days, which shows high demand. A total of 1.6 million cards are available. Andrea Varnier, the head of the games, expressed confident and satisfied about the previous sale. A second round of sales via a lottery procedure is planned for the coming week to offer further tickets. Most map buyers from Germany and the USA struck to Italy.
logistical challenges and athletes preparation
In view of the upcoming challenge, the ÖOC also emphasized that, despite the economic savings constraints, an optimal preparation of the athletes should be guaranteed. Most athletes are accommodated in outside quarters, which requires precise planning. The transport concept, which is decisive for the logistics of the competitions, is to be presented in the coming days. Nussbaumer confidently looks at the upcoming Olympics and looks forward to hearing the first Austrian anthem at a gold medal.
