ÖVP and FPÖ: agreement on live broadcasts of U-committees!

Österreich - On May 28, 2025, ÖVP MP Andreas Hanger and FPÖ general secretary Christian Hafenecker discussed on Puls 24 on the live broadcast of investigation committees, which both parties agreed. The consensus about the need for such transmissions is required by many sides to strengthen the trust of citizens in politics.

However,

Hafenecker criticized the ÖVP by accusing it of delaying the implementation of these transmissions. Hanger pointed out that National Council President Walter Rosenkranz approved a public transfer of the meetings in his inaugural speech, and countered the accusations of the FPÖ. Hafenecker explained that the FPÖ is working on the implementation of the live broadcasts and was optimistic that there will be implementation by September 2025.

Focus of the U-Committee

In the current debate about the committees of the investigation, the FPÖ calls for a review of the Corona measures of the government and the case of Christian Pilnacek. This was also brought up in the National Council, where the FPÖ earned a corresponding request. Hafenecker described the People's Party as part of a "deep black state" and denounced alleged abuse of power, while on an "urgent request" to Chancellor Christian Stocker (ÖVP). The absence of Stocker during the debate was interpreted by the FPÖ as a clear sign of an old power game.

The discussion about the topics in the U-Committee shows that opinions within the parties are different. Hangers expressed concerns to mix both topics with each other, however, advocated working through them one after the other.

referendum and public integration

The demand for live broadcasts goes beyond the current political debate. According to a referendum, which was signed by 102,755 people, it should be made possible for citizens to pursue the meetings of the committees of investigation directly. The aim is that the population is better integrated into political decision -making. The focus is on the survey of people who are of public interest.

To clarify open questions, Hanger announced an expert round. This serves to determine criteria, who is considered a person of public interest and who can decide. All parties seem to be aimed at a quick solution to the problems, while two U-committees are currently active: the COFAG investigation committee and the committee for "red-blue abuse of power".

The persistent negotiations between the parties on this matter show how important it is to further promote social and political discussion about transparency and responsibility. While these topics raise many critical questions, one thing remains clear: the live broadcasts could be an important step to strengthen the democratic process.

As part of the political landscape, it will be crucial to actively integrate citizens into the processes of parliament in order to achieve a higher level of trust and transparency. The developments in the coming months will be of great importance for both the MPs and for voters.
