ÖVP plans upswing: the way out of the budget crisis!
Österreich - Austrian politics is in a phase of the reassessment. The ÖVP describes the first ten weeks of the turquoise-red government as a "Buddha phase". This time is intended to symbolize calm and stability after years of numerous crises and hectic campaigns. Chancellor Christian Stocker is deliberately positioned as a counter-model to his predecessors in order to convey a fresh and determined picture to the voter. The focus here is on "results instead of staging", which means to present tangible results for the government that the citizens can feel.
However, strategists of the ÖVP are aware that seriousness alone is not sufficient to significantly improve the survey values. The concern over the possibility that the planned savings package in the population could encounter resistance is also present. Against this background, there is now a new “project upwards” that aims to increase the party's survey values.
strategic future prospects
In the coming weeks, the ministers will be asked to explain their budgets and list investments. Three central areas of the future should be emphasized: the economy and location, health care and care as well as education and integration. At the same time, the ÖVP is planning to rely heavily on topics such as security and immigration in the future to mobilize its electorate.
Current surveys show that the ÖVP lies in voting, but only just behind the FPÖ. According to the latest data, the Freedom Party runs 33.1%, while the Social Democratic Party reaches 21.3% and ÖVP 21.2%. The NEOs are currently 10%, and the Greens reach 9.1%. Surveys of the past three months show a slight increase of 1.6% for the ÖVP, while the FPÖ had to accept a decrease of 0.7%. The next National Council election is expected to take place in 2029.
political framework conditions
The current government parties, which together receive 55.2% of the votes in the surveys, face the challenge of securing a stable majority in a fragmented political climate. Most MPs are right -wing, which influences political dynamics and possible coalitions. In view of the 4%hurdle for moving into parliament, it is becoming increasingly difficult for smaller parties to play an important role.
The political leadership style of Chancellor Stocker is seen by many as an attempt to initiate a new era in the ÖVP who wants to break away from the past. However, time will show whether this is sufficient to convince citizens of the current challenges and survey values.
