Austria's table tennis sensation: Polcanova Received the first World Cup medal in 22 years!
At the World Table Tennis Championship in Doha, Sofia Polcanova achieved a remarkable success. Together with her double partner Bernadette Szöcs, she reached the semi-finals in the women's double competition. In an exciting game, the Austrian duo defeated the German combination Wan Yuan/Sabine Winter 3: 1 (7, 8, -4, 10) and thus secured the first World Cup medal for the Austrian table tennis association since the title of Werner Schlager in 2003.
The delegation manager of the Austrian table tennis association (ÖTTV), Jarek Kolodziejczyk, commented on the game and noted that the inexperienced Wan Yuan was more nervous. A strategic time-out was crucial for success. Kolodziejczyk is optimistic about the upcoming final against the South Koreans Shin Yubin and Ryu Hanna and emphasizes that the duo still has opportunities in the final.

The joy of the medal win was also shared by ÖTTV Vice President Liu Jia, who expressed a lot about this success. The table tennis family in Austria is enthusiastic about this historical performance. The duo already has another challenge on Saturday when they compete against the Korean players.
The World Cup in Doha continues not only for Polcanova. Robert Gardos, who scored in singles and in doubles with Polcanova, also successfully played his first games. Despite mild health restrictions, Gardos competed and defeated the Belgian Cedric Nuytinck with 4: 2 (7, -6, 10, -7, 9, 7). In the second round he now meets the Japanese Maharu Yoshimura.

Sofia Polcanova was also able to convince in the mixed double together with Gardos and clearly won against the Serbs Dimitrije Levajac and Izabela Lupulesku with 3: 0 (12, 10). The mixed duo has thus reached the round of the last 32. Gardos was positive about the support of Polcanova, who helped him find his rhythm, especially after he had a critical moment at 2: 2.
