Austria's music charts on the upswing: domestic hits conquer the top positions!
Österreich - On May 29, 2025, the Austrian music scene will be shown in excellent constitution. The "Ö3 Austria Top40" have recently been updated and only run domestic interpreters in the first three places. OTS reports that the number one from JJS is dominated with the hit "Wasted Love", followed by RAF Camora and Reezy with "Connected" in second place & tynna with "Baller" Third place. These successes are also reflected in the "Europe Official Top 100", where the same artists also take top positions.
If you take a closer look at the daily program of the Hitradio Ö3, it becomes clear that domestic music has only a small proportion. According to the OTS, the proportion of the Ö3 day program before the Eurovision Song Contest was 13.3 percent in April 2025, which only corresponds to 1.8 titles per hour.
challenges and developments
The discussion about promoting domestic music is not new. Peter Paul Skrepek, musician and representative of interests, expressed the hope that the proportion of local sounds on the radio will increase in the future. He refers to past development in Austria, which was characterized by a dramatic decline in domestic productions. A significant event was 1995 when a German music market manager announced that the Austrian production was due to zero, which led to a massive decline in the music division. Protests from the music scene were subsequently ignored or dismissed.
In order to address the problem politically, the “Austrian Note” citizens' initiative was launched in 1997. A milestone was the music team in 2008, in which the misery was discussed in detail. A future -oriented step took place in December 2009 when the ORF is committed to the radiation of domestic music. In 2018, the guidelines in the "MusikCharta" were renewed to determine a quota for core economic.
The current state of the music industry
According to current reports, including an analysis by ORF, the local music industry is under pressure. This is primarily due to the increasing dominance of streaming services and too low airplay for local artists. There is a broad consensus in the industry about the need for increased support and recognition. In order to illustrate the importance of the industry, a study by the Econmove Institute shows an impressive added value of 7.5 billion euros, which raises the music industry to the third strongest industry in Austria. It accounts for 2.8 percent of gross domestic product and secures around 117,000 jobs, both directly and indirectly.
This year's influence of domestic artists could be a sign of a positive trend. Nevertheless, the challenge remains to increase the proportion of Austrian music on the radio. The target is set at a European level of more than 40 percent domestic music on radio, which would mean a significant step to strengthen the domestic scene.
