Austria's JJ: Favorite for the ESC with Wasted Love in Basel!

St. Jakobshalle, Basel, Schweiz - Today, on May 15, 2025, the music world focuses on the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in Basel, where Austria's representative JJ competes with his emotional ballad "Wasted Love". The 24-year-old countertenor, known as Johannes Pietsch, is considered one of the top favorites of this competition. The song addresses the bitter sweet reality of unrequited love and combines elements from pop and techno.

The co-author of the song, 25-year-old Teodora Špirić, better known as Teya, also brings ESC experience. In 2023 she already competed with the Duo Teya & Salena and will be heard in the background vocal. "Wasted Love" is not only emotionally charged, but also musically varied, and was released on March 6, 2025. The audience can expect the performance as part of the second semi -final that takes place today.

The creative background

The creative team behind "Wasted Love" includes JJ and Teya, but also Thomas Turner, who is responsible for synthesizer, drums and piano. Additional support comes from the Budapest Scoring Orchestra, led by Zoltán Pad. These production qualities further highlight the song and set the sound for impressive performance.

The music video, which was staged by Vesely Marek, was also published on the official Eurovision Song Contest YouTube Canal. Impressive pictures create a visual connection to the topics of "Wasted Love".

The support of previous participants

Before the semi -finals, the interest in the Austrian contribution is great. Four former participants of the ESC, including Kaleen from 2022 and Conchita, who won in 2014 for Austria, are the fingers crossed in Basel and JJ. Kaleen is also responsible for the stinged design of the Armenian representative Parg, while Cesár Sampson, who took third place in 2018, is active in the creative team of the Czech Republic Adonxs.

Austrian ESC history has been shaped by mixed successes since the nation took part in the competition for the first time in 1957 when Bob Martin with "Where, little pony?" last place. Udo Jürgens, who first appeared for Austria in 1964, won the title with "Merci Chérie" in 1966, which is still a milestone.
