Austria cheers: MUK student JJ crowns the Eurovision winner!

Wien, Österreich - Johannes "JJ" Pietsch won the Eurovision Song Contest for Austria on May 19, 2025. The competition, which took place in Basel, is seen as an important event in the history of the Austrian music competition. Pietsch appeared with his emotional song "Wasted Love" and thus secured first place.

The Rector of Music and Art Private University Vienna (MUK), Andreas Mailath-Pokorny, transmitted personal congratulations to the talented countertenor. He praised the connection of classic training with pop music and explained that Pietsch's success is a milestone for the MUK that can be proud of her student. The institution is known for its training in artistic and scientific disciplines and promotes around 900 students under the guidance of over 280 teachers.

JJ Pietsch's background and training

Johannes Pietsch was born in Vienna in 2001, but grew up in Dubai. In 2016 he moved back to Vienna, where he later began studying Solo singing on the MUK in 2023 with his bachelor's degree in the subject, under the guidance of chamber singer Linda Watson. Pietsch, who has Austrian-Philippine roots, quickly made a name for itself as an extraordinary talent in the music area.

The MUK, a public institution, is closely related to the cultural life of Vienna and part of Vienna Holding. Pietsch's success not only brings fame for itself, but also underlines the high -quality training at the MUK, which is characterized by the interaction of classic and modern music styles.

Austria's Eurovision story

The victory of Pietsch fits into the glorious, but also by failure of Austria, in the Eurovision Song Contest. Austria took part in the competition for the first time in 1958. Bob Martin did not achieve any significant success with his song "Where, little pony". In the following decades, many candidates, including representatives such as Thomas Forstner and Alf Poier, fought a better performance.

A highlight in the history of Austria was the victory of Conchita Wurst in 2014 with "Rise Like a Phoenix", which brought the country back to the road to success. The Eurovision Song Contest is often seen as a platform for artistic expression and cultural exchange, an opportunity that Pietsch is now manifested with his victory.

With this victory, the future for Johannes "JJ" Pietsch and the MUK is promising. It remains to be seen how his career will develop, but the Eurovision victory will undoubtedly take a special place in its musical career.
