OEEB report: 900 million euros for sustainable climate projects 2024!

The Austria Development Bank AG (OEEB) has published its annual impact report, which shows the progress and challenges in the field of sustainable development. According to [oekonews.at] (https://www2.oekoneews.at/oeb-impact- 2024-round-900-millions-euro-fuer climate-relevant project+2400+1227131) over 380,000 micro, small and medium-sized businesses were supported in developing countries. The overall portfolio of the OEEEB comprises 1.74 billion euros, of which 428 million euros were invested in Africa. It is particularly noteworthy that 51 percent of the portfolio, i.e. around 900 million euros, flowed into climate -relevant projects.

The report also documents that 17 percent of the overall portfolio was invested in Least Developed Countries. More than half of the portfolio was geared towards projects that contribute to achieving climate goals. 48 percent of the projects promoted decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), while 18 percent contributed to the promotion of industry, innovation and infrastructure (SDG 9)

technical support and training

Another important aspect of report is the support of 183 companies and financial institutions through Technical Assistance Measures. Training measures have to benefit around 10,000 people in these organizations. In addition, the financing by the OEEB enabled over 300,000 people to be busy in projects and companies. Particularly noteworthy is the investment of 173 million euros in projects that contribute to the economic strengthening of women.

In view of the challenges of climate change, OEEB achieved an average temperature of 1.5 ° C above the pre -industrial level in view of the challenges of climate change. In view of this alarming development, additional measures are urgently needed, such as the UN poster series "Climate Knowledge for everyone", which conveys knowledge of climate change and illustrates the connections to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS). This initiative is a joint project of several UN agencies, including UNESCO, ILO and UNEP, and aims to present global climate risks and their effects in particular without restricting itself to a certain climate zone, as [henningschwarze.com] (https://henningenschwarze.com/ Grundlagen-klima Science/).

challenges for access to energy

Despite the progress, there are still considerable hurdles to achieve SDG 7 (Sustainable Development Goal 7) that would like to promote universal access to energy. By 2030, around 660 million people are expected to have no access to electricity. Almost two billion people continue to rely on health and environmental fuels. These problems are particularly pronounced in the least developed countries and in Subsahara Africa. A decline in international funding for renewable energies in developing countries makes the situation even more difficult, as bmz.de emphasizes.

The global economic uncertainties caused by the attack by Russia to Ukraine and the increase in energy prices are additional challenges. While some countries invest more in renewable energies, others are increasingly falling back to coal, which endangers the transition to a climate -neutral society.
