ÖBB buys 17 Westbahn trains: a new progress in rail traffic!

Wien, Österreich - The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) recently acquired 17 intercity trains from Deutsche Bahn (DB). These trains, which are known as the Kiss double trains from the Swiss manufacturer Stadler Rail, represent a significant expansion of the ÖBB fleet. The purchase is particularly noteworthy, since these trains were originally sold by the Westbahn to Deutsche Bahn in 2019, while ÖBB already showed interest in them, as was already the case OE24 reported.

Deutsche Bahn had the KISS trains overhaul from 2020 to 2022 and is now faced with the decision to repellent them because it has sufficient intercity trains in its existence. Insiders estimate the ÖBB sales price for these trains at around 200 million euros, although the actual price has not yet been confirmed. The takeover comprises eight six-car trains and nine four-car trains.

expansion of the vehicle park

In addition to the newly acquired Intercity trains, ÖBB took over the 250th Cityjet train of the "Desiro ML" Cityjet train from Siemens Mobility on Thursday. This is part of a more comprehensive initiative that started in 2010 with the first order of Cityjet trains. In total, ÖBB plans to put 294 trains of this type into operation in order to meet the ever greater demands of rail transport, such as Krone.

The ÖBB's investments in the rail infrastructure have been particularly pronounced in Austria. In 2022, ÖBB's trains with 211 million passengers in rail traffic and 42 million in long -distance transport were not only used frequently, but also offered with a high punctuality of around 81 percent in long -distance transport and 96 percent in local transport. This high use is part of a continuous increase in rail transport, especially since 2020, where the proportion of rail transport in Austria was 27 percent, such as Statista notes.

with a total of almost 7,000 trains that drive the ÖBB route network, and a route length of around 5,600 kilometers, of which around 4,000 kilometers are electrified, Austria positions itself as a pioneer in the area of rail transport, and last but not least through significant investments on the part of the state. In a European comparison, Austria invests around 319 euros per capita in the rail infrastructure, which corresponds to a new maximum value and shows the highest priority for the future development of the rail network.

The ÖBB not only campaigns for the renewal and expansion of your vehicle fleet, but also contribute significantly to improve the rail infrastructure, which is to be further expanded in the coming years.
