RSV vaccinations for newborns: protection against serious respiratory diseases!

In the Salzkammergut Klinikum Bad Ischl, a crucial step was taken to combat severe respiratory diseases in newborns. As one of the first hospitals in the region, the team administered the first RSV vaccination (respiratory syncytial virus) to babies on the first day after the delivery of the new vaccine, which has been approved since 2023. Dr. Elisabeth Osman, head of the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Healing, reported on this important measure and explained: "With this vaccination, we can prevent serious illnesses in infants." These steps are particularly relevant because RSV infections often lead to hospital stays in small children in the winter months.

First practical success and background knowledge

The highly infectious RSV has proven in the past as one of the most common causes of serious respiratory diseases in young patients, of which 29 children had to be treated in the Salzkammergut Clinic. The symptoms are often mild, but can quickly cause serious complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia, which can even become life -threatening in infants, such as Tips.at reported. "Vaccination can prevent many hospital stays," emphasized Dr. Tilman Königswieser, medical director of the clinic. Parents are asked to use the protection for their newborns to prevent severe courses during the seasonal RSV waves.

The vaccine is offered in the months from September to March, since RSV is particularly active at that time. According to the current status, the vaccination is unique and does not have to be repeated annually. In addition to Bad Ischl, the vaccine is also provided in the Salzkammergut Klinikum Vöcklabruck. The rapid implementation of this vaccination campaign is a promising step to better health care for newborns in the region.
