Animal protection according to the flood: 441 rescued animals in Spain

The Tierhilfe Gusental saved and supplied over 400 animals after the devastating flood disaster in Spain. Gregor Finster and Clarissa Grabmair traveled to Valencia on November 8 to help in the crisis area. After their return, they both remember the destruction that left the flood. "The waterline is visible on many walls, and the streets testify to the floods that rose up to two meters," reports Finster.

During their nine days on site, their tasks were released in providing animals, supplying injured animals and transporting food into inaccessible areas. The salvage of deceased animals was also necessary to prevent epidemics. "We even had to save animals from a partially collapsed building," continued Finster.

challenges and success

The team met with numerous challenges, especially in operations in remote mountain villages, where streets were washed away through the storm. "In one case, we could only drive through the stream bed with off -road vehicles before we had to continue on foot," he says. On the positive side there were moments of success, such as the rescue of a horse that was carried away by the floods and was found by its owner last week.

Overall, the helpers in Valencia were able to save 441 animals - including 68 horses, 13 donkeys, 62 dogs, 178 cats and numerous small animals. The gratitude of the people on site was noticeable, even if many of them lost their belongings. Finster emphasizes the importance of further clean -up work that is expected to continue for a long time: "It is impressive to see how people accept all help and how strong the community is in this difficult time."

The cleanup will continue for a long time and the Tierhilfe Gusental plans to support further aid measures. For more information about this aid campaign www.meinbezirk.at .
