Spading for 800 million euros: Upper Austria's power grid of the future

A few hours ago, the starting signal for an ambitious construction project was given that will have a major impact on the energy landscape in Upper Austria. Together, the Austrian Power Grid (APG), Netz Upper Austria and Linz Netz will invest 800 million euros in the network infrastructure-large project "Safe power supply central room Upper Austria". This project should be completed by 2030 and forms a decisive component for the energy transition in the region.

The focus is on the renewal of the 70 year old 110 kV line. This is replaced by a modern 220 kV supply ring. It is planned to renew around 42 kilometers of lines as well as the expansion or conversion of eight substances. This expansion should not only ensure long -term power supply, but also create the necessary infrastructure for switching to renewable energies. "The success of the energy transition is decided by the power grid," explained Gerhard Christiner, the spokesman for the board of APG, at the official groundbreaking ceremony.

strengthening the business location

But the project not only has environmentally political, but also economic dimensions. "With this expansion, we create the basis for a future -proof energy supply and make a decisive contribution to the changeover to renewable energies," emphasized Environmental Councilor Stefan Kaineder from the Greens. The investments should not only benefit the environment, but also increase the economic performance of Upper Austria.

green steel as a destination

A concrete goal of the new electricity infrastructure is to support the production of green steel in the Voestalpine in Linz. From 2027 it is planned to operate the first electric layer stove with sustainable electricity. This measure could help the company to save around 30 % of its CO₂ emissions by 2029. "For green steel we need sufficient, reliable electricity at competitive prices," said Gerald Mayer, CFO of Voestalpine AG.

The first work as part of the project have already taken place. The feed capacity in the central area is currently increased from 780 to 3,400 MVA, which creates the basis for the desired decarbonization. The first implementations are underway in Kronstorf, Pichling and Tillysburg.
