Design competition for the regional city railway Linz: ideas in demand!
in Upper Austria, especially in Linz, an exciting competition for the design of the regional town railway is currently being proclaimed. The rail OÖ calls creative minds to submit their ideas for the stops and their surroundings. The aim is that the new S-Bahn lines S6 and S7 as well as the associated stops are harmoniously integrated into the city and landscape.
The focus of the competition is that the architectural design of the stops and the surface design of the immediate vicinity are determined in order to intervene in the existing cityscape as little as possible. A total of seven stops are planned, including stations such as local transport nodes Urfahr-Ost and Hafenstraße. Particular attention is paid to the Hafenstraße stop, which should be an example of the quality of the entire project.
Submission period and jury
The creative people have time until January 20, 2025 to submit their concepts. The winning ideas will be presented in the first half of 2025. The Urfahr-East traffic junction is to be designed light and inviting to avoid fear dreams. Where it is technically possible, green tracks should also be created, which not only contribute to cooling down the environment, but also bind dust and act as water storage.
A jury from ten experts will evaluate the submitted concepts. This includes representatives of the civil engineering chamber, the Upper Austria rail, the design advisory board of the city of Linz as well as the state of Upper Austria and the magistrate Linz. The development of these stops is seen as an opportunity to sustainably improve the urban infrastructure and create space for new shops and local providers.
architectural visions
"Our goal is an appealing architecture that is larger than the sum of its parts," says Sonja Wiesholzer, managing director of the Upper Austria rail. "We want to create a pleasant environment that is perceived as a positive room." Günther Steinkellner, State Councilor for Infrastructure, also sees the regional town railway as a future lifeline of public transport that will shape the cityscape.
Overall, this competition will not only upgrade the structural design, but also the functionality of the regional town railway and at the same time create a new, attractive space in public life. The journey to the new regional city railway Linz has started and creative ideas are the heart of this project.
