Hofkirchen starts initiative to protect the bees and soils
The market town of Hofkirchen in Upper Austria recently launched an important project to protect the bees. A workshop in the hall of the music school marked the official starting signal for participation in the “Bee -friendly community” project. As part of this initiative, which extends over the years 2024 and 2025, various measures are implemented to support bee population and at the same time raise awareness of bee protection.
The project is funded by the environmental department of the state of Upper Austria and includes a number of activities that focus on public spaces, gardens, agricultural businesses and the sensitization of the population. The aim is to improve the framework conditions for bees that have decreased significantly in recent years. Wild bee species are particularly affected, of which there are around 700 in Austria, with the honey bee being the best known.
background and measures
The decline in bee stocks is multifactorial, which means that different causes collect together. This includes the loss of food and nesting places, the improper use of pesticides and climatic changes. Healthy soil quality plays a crucial role because many wild bee species nest there. And the variety of food above the ground is essential for its survival.
The sustainable design of public green spaces and the care without chemical-synthetic pesticides should be significantly improved the living conditions for bees. In addition, the municipality will initiate various promotions and campaigns to strengthen the awareness of bee protection and actively involve the population.
A central element of the project is the creation of blossom-rich habitats with local plants that serve as a source of food for both honey and wild bees. Cooperation with different actors - including beekeepers, agricultural representatives, clubs, employees of the municipality and companies as well as educational institutions - is crucial for the success of this initiative. The approach is not only considered an example of other municipalities, but also as directional for the sustainable protection of bees and soils in the region.
