Grieskirchner beer: change of location and new visions for the city

In a moving development step, the almost three hectare terrain of the brewery in the center of Grieskirchen was sold. After two bankruptcies within four years, the Grieskirchner beer brand continues to exist - but owner Marcus Mautner Markhof was forced to sell the area. The new buyers, the project developers Holzhaider and Wiltschko, are already planning to redesign the property in the coming years.

The approaches that the new owners pursue are versatile. In addition to the construction of apartments, a student dormitory, an event center, a hotel and a public underground car park could also enrich the cityscape. Even if concrete plans are still under development, the managing directors Johann Amerstorfer and Friedrich Wiltschko are optimistic about future needs in the city center.

bankruptcies as an occasion for the sale

The brewery owner Mautner Markhof emphasizes that the sale was essential to handle bankruptcy. "We make a table and check out the past," he said. The outstanding debts can be operated with the sale, since a creditor rate of 70 percent can be met. The essential areas for administration, warehouse and logistics are rented out by the new owners so that the brand remains and the beer is produced according to the traditional recipes in the Frastanz brewery in Vorarlberg. At the moment, only 16 employees are working at the Grieskirchen location.

Mautner Markhof does not rule out that in the future it may be possible to produce its own production near Grieskirchen. "Economically, it was the right step to outsource the production. In terms of marketing, it is a drop of bitterness that we gave up brewing beer in the city," said the brewery owner.

With the sale of the site, Mautner Markhof also sees opportunities for the city of Grieskirchen: "We have the opportunity to develop a new heart of the city from this area." How exactly the plans of the new owners can be implemented remains to be seen, but the city shows itself in a positive light for future developments.
