Future forum in Gmunden: HTL students: Design sustainable technology inside

On November 13, 2024, the future conconvent took place in Gmunden, an important event that focused on sustainable technologies. Around 1,000 participants, including students from higher technical educational institutions (HTL) and specialists from innovative companies, came together to deal with current topics and to develop solutions for the challenges of the climate and energy crisis. The focus was on developments in the areas of artificial intelligence and hydrogen technologies.

The future conconvent of Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr.Mont. Helmut Antrekowitsch, a prominent scientist at the Montan University Leoben. In his rousing speech, he asked the young technology enthusiasts to actively search for solutions. "It is time to roll up and act up the sleeves," says Antekowitsch. He made it clear how important technical innovations are for climate protection.

As part of the future conconvent, the participants were able to attend an interactive exhibition that presented many innovative companies. Companies such as Fronius and the Austrian Armed Forces invited the students to get to know their technologies and working methods better. By using virtual reality glasses and practical experiments, young people were able to gain up close experiences with sustainable technology.

A special highlight was the appearance of Dr. David Schedl, Professor of Visual Computing. He explained how modern generative AI systems work and what effects they can have on future professions and training. The training content was linked directly to the rapidly changing market situation, which is of the utmost importance for the prospective technicians.

Another expert, Dipl.-Ing. Joshua Eder from the Hycenta hydrogen research center spoke about the central role of hydrogen in a sustainable energy industry. He made it clear that for many industrial processes, such as ammonia production, hydrogen is indispensable and emphasized the need to rely on green hydrogen.

The futureConvent had developed into an important platform to promote connection between educational institutions and companies. The HTLS and universities consistently rated their participation positively and underlined that sustainability plays a central role in teaching and research.

Felix Krainer, a young environmental activist who has already reached over three million followok on Tiktok with his initiative Planet Matters, set a special accent. He encouraged the participants to actively work for environmental issues and to promote environmental awareness in the younger generation. His impressive presence makes it clear how young people can appear as an ambassador for sustainable topics these days.

The FutureConvent is not only an event for technical know-how, but also conveys social and environmental policy responsibility.
