Climbing accident in Hallstatt: Czech mountaineers are seriously injured
An exciting day in the Austrian mountains became a nightmare for a 36-year-old Czech. On October 12, around 1:15 p.m., he had come together with two friends in the P4 car park in the municipal area of Hallstatt to climb over the challenging seawand via ferrata, which is classified as D/E. Unfortunately, the conditions in the wall were anything but optimal that day. The moist weather led to slippery rocks that make climbing significantly more difficult.
The scene of the accident was just above the "bat bivouac" towards Igel. Here the man slipped and could not intercept the steel rope. In a falling case, this resulted from several meters to the next safety unit. In doing so, he contracted an injury to the right ankle, which made it impossible to continue climbing or descending independently.
use of the rescue helicopter
In view of the dramatic situation, the man was forced to make an emergency call. The emergency medical helicopter "Martin 1" was immediately alerted and quickly came to help. The injured person was recovered from the via ferrata with a special variable dew. The Czech was first looked after at a intermediate landing site that was previously set up by the mountain rescue and alpine police before it was flown to the Salzkammergut Clinic in Bad Ischl. This quick use of the rescue workers is particularly noteworthy because it took place under the difficult weather conditions. It remains to be seen how severe the man's injuries are ultimately and whether he can soon return to the mountains. The necessary caution in climbing is once again underlined by this incident, especially in wet and slippery conditions that underestimate many climbers.
