A year of cultural capital: Bad Ischl enthusiastic with creative highlights

A year as a European Capital of Culture - the Salzkammergut has impressively staged in the past few months. Despite the special challenges that this goal brought, the feedback from cultural workers and organizers is consistently positive. Creative events and exhibitions were held in various locations that were able to attract both locals and tourists.

The Lentos Art Museum in Linz played a central role with its outstanding exhibition "The Journey of the Pictures", which dealt intensively with the topic of Nazi robbery. The director of the museum, Hemma Schmutz, emphasized the importance of this project for understanding the complex history of works of art from this time. Around 50,000 visitors were interested in what shows how much the topic still has meaning after years. "We hope that such exhibitions will help to raise a better awareness of dealing with cultural heritage," said Schmutz.

But not only the Lentos contributed to the cultural capital. Johanna Mitterbauer from the Salzkammergut Festwochen emphasized the commitment to a mixture of traditional and contemporary music, which began with the "Hausmusik-Roas". This event combines different styles of music and has inspired many people since its introduction in 2021. The "letters" mentioned, in which regional artists prescribe letters, also met with great interest. The connection between local history and literature was put into the foreground.

Another highlight was the exhibition curated by Ai Weiwei, which took place in Bad Ischl. Mitterbauer is convinced that such international projects will continue to be important for Gmunden and the Salzkammergut to attract tourists and create cultural synergies.

challenges and outlook

Despite the positive balance sheet, Klemens Pilsl from the Upper Austria cultural platform also sees critical points. He emphasizes that the original hopes for a cultural capital supported by civil society are not yet fully fulfilled. Nevertheless, he recognizes the organizers' efforts who had to work under difficult conditions. "The opening ceremony was an experience, even if it was partially viewed critically," he said. Pilsl sees the success of this cultural project as a long -term process that can only be extensively assessed in a few years.

In the heart of the Capital of Culture in 2024, the intention of creating a sustainable cultural vision for the Salzkammergut that goes beyond the tourist attractions. A look into the future is crucial, because a cultural capital requires more than just a beautiful landscape and lively events. According to the OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH, 2024 was a big step, and it remains to be seen how the region will use this dynamic in the coming years. Help may offer new exhibitions and committed artists who bring a breath of fresh air through their ideas to the region.

Some events, such as the renovation of the city theater in Gmunden, might not have come about without the status of the Capital of Culture, which underlines the positive effect of this title.

These diverse offers testify to a creative departure in the Salzkammergut and show how important cultural activities are for the region. A deeper insight into the successes and challenges of the Capital of Culture will certainly expand and differentiate in the coming years, while continuing to work on the cultural identity and the legacy of the region.
