Experts warn: Austria needs open space PV for energy transition
In a current report, Hubert Fechner, the chairman of the technology platform Photovoltaic, expressed his view that Austria is faced with a decisive challenge in order to successfully implement the energy transition. Experts emphasize that to achieve the climate goals by 2030, the country will need a significant increase in the production capacity of photovoltaic energy-an increase of up to 21 terawatt hours is required.
Fechner pointed out that the possibilities of installing photovoltaics on existing buildings and infrastructures will not be sufficient to achieve these ambitious goals. This presents politics and the economy to the urgent need to identify and develop alternative areas for open space PV systems.
The importance of open space PV
The focus on open space PV could play a key role in the energy production of the future. Open space PV refers to the use of unused areas such as meadows, fields or former industrial plants for the installation of solar panels. This method could not only generate additional energy, but also the space requirement for installation could be reduced to a minimum by creative solutions.
In the context of Austrian climate policy, it was also discussed how a comprehensive strategy for the development of open space PV locations could look like. The integration of these strategies into the existing infrastructure is of crucial importance in order to ensure a smooth transition to renewable energy use and to position Tyrol as a pioneer in the energy transition.
In order to take the necessary steps, both political decision -makers and companies have to work closely together to realize these projects. Fechner and other experts agree that a clear and concrete planning for the implementation of these systems is essential, since a passive approach will not be sufficient.
