Green electrification of the Mattigtalbahn: One step into the future

The electrification of the Mattigtalbahn, which takes place at a rapid pace, will fundamentally modernize the connection between Steindorf near Straßwalchen and Braunau by 2028. From the timetable change in 2027/28, travelers on this route should be on the road with 100 percent green electricity. During a on-site visit in Braunau, high-ranking representatives of the ÖBB and politics, including Minister of Climate Protection Leonore Gewessler and the ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä, explained the innovations and their meaning.

The section from Friedburg to Braunau, where electrification started in September, extends over 42 kilometers. In order to enable this transformation measure, 772 new masts are built and various overhead line work is carried out. This modernization is not only a step towards climate -friendly mobility, but should also upgrade the infrastructure of the entire region.

modernization of the train stations and railway nodes

As part of the electrification work, all 63 railway crossings along the route must be modernized or closed. This is necessary in order not to affect the view of the drivers, since the new overhead line masts could possibly hinder the view. By the end of 2027, about half of these intersections will be abandoned, which also means that the stop in Furth will no longer be approached from the 2024/25 timetable change. A replacement stop is planned in the adjacent community of Schalchen.

The modernization also enhances the train stations in Munderfing, Mattighofen and Mauerkirchen. These new, barrier-free central platforms and Park and Ride facilities not only improve comfort and quality of stay for passengers, but also aim to facilitate switching to the train. The reused station building is also equipped with a photovoltaic system, which entails significant ecological advantages.

meaning of the initiative

The modernization of the Mattigtalbahn is viewed by political core and executives of ÖBB as a clear commitment to expanded regional traffic. Andreas Matthä underlined that these measures will not only enable user -friendly surroundings, but also increase reliability, punctuality and comfort for all travelers. State Councilor Günther Steinkellner noted that this project is part of the largest rail investment package in the history of Upper Austria, with the aim of making the infrastructure sustainable, safe and modern.

The effects of these construction work are profound. They aim to increase the attractiveness of the region for company settlements and consequently contribute to the creation of new jobs. The innovations set a sign of progress and sustainability in the region and will offer users of the Mattigtalbahn several advantages, while they are also increasing the tourist and economic opportunities in the area.
