Braunau am Inn: Historical street racing under fire!

Braunau am Inn, Österreich - in Braunau am Inn, the city that went down in history as Adolf Hitler's birth, the legacy of the National Socialists is currently being put to the test. On behalf of the city, historian Florian Schwanninger examined the biographies of four namesake of streets in the city and further promoted alarming results. The focus is particularly on the road racing according to Josef Reiter, a glowing Hitler admirer and member of the NSDAP, as well as Eduard Kriechbaum, a prominent Nazi official. The municipal council of Braunau has now decided to recognize riders and Kriechbaum the honorary citizenship, although in the case of Reiter case, the FPÖ contained in the Kreihbaum case, as the Sturm & Drang Zeitung emphasizes that, while the city has long since avoidable difficulties to get rid of its "brown image", the name according to the Nazi person has no contribution to drive this shadow.

The debate about the street names in Braunau reflects a deeper problem. The pressure on urban politics is growing to face their responsibility and to distance yourself from the Nazi past. The results of Schwanninger's study could significantly influence the course of urban politics by paving the way for the renaming of several streets, including Franz-Resl-Straße and Dr.-Wilhelm-Scheuba-Gasse. The public discussion about the historical burden of these names shows that the fight against the legacy of National Socialism in Braunau is only at the beginning
