Nightjet starts through: comfort and sustainability on the new route!
Wien, Österreich - On May 27, 2025, the new night train Nightjet started with its premiere trip to Amsterdam. The farewell in Vienna was accompanied by high-ranking representatives from politics and business, including the Federal Minister of Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure, Peter Hanke, the CEO of the ÖBB, Andreas Matthä, the Dutch ambassador, Peter Potman, and the deputy EU commission representative, Christian Wigand. These celebrations mark a significant step in the development of European rail traffic.
The Nightjet is used on the Vienna-Amsterdam and Innsbruck-Amsterdam routes. This new offer is to promote a climate -friendly expansion of European rail traffic. The new generation's night jets are characterized by more comfort, privacy and sustainability.
innovative equipment and capacity
The trains consist of seven parts, including two seating trolleys (control car & multifunctional car), three couchnaps and two sleeping cars. In total, the trains offer space for up to 254 people. Particularly noteworthy is the multifunctional car, which offers six bicycle parking spaces as well as more space for luggage, strollers and sports equipment.
The equipment includes numerous modern amenities, such as free WiFi with the onboard portal ÖBB RailNet Night, a passenger information system, sockets, USB charging connections and inductive charging stations. There is also a service display in the compartments for controlling the lighting and for service calls, an electronic access system with NFC cards and video surveillance in all cars.
EU and sustainable traffic
The developments related to the Nightjet are in line with the goals of EU transport policy, which promotes a modern infrastructure network to enable faster and safer trips. This policy not only supports the European economy, but also promotes environmentally friendly and digital solutions. Traffic plays a crucial role in the integration in Europe and enables free goods traffic and the free movement of services and people.
With a contribution of over 9 % to the gross value addiction of the EU and around 11 million employees in the transport sector, the importance of this industry is evident. The EU has also undertaken to reduce the traffic -related emissions by 60 % by 2050 compared to 1990, which particularly promotes innovative and sustainable means of transport such as the Nightjet.
The challenges in the transport system, such as traffic overload and the dependence on oil, illustrate the urgency of modern solutions. In this context, the Nightjet not only represents a new standard in night traffic, but also contributes to the achievement of the EU's energy and climate policy goals.
The introduction of such environmentally friendly alternatives is paved for sustainable mobility that meets the requirements of modern society. The first trip from the Nightjet to Amsterdam could thus serve as a pioneer for a more environmentally friendly future in European rail traffic.
