Vienna relies on cycling: New security path on the new building belt!
Neubaugürtel, Wien, Österreich - The city of Vienna takes a significant step to improve the cycling infrastructure by converting a previous car trail on the belt into a two-direction cycle path. This measure is realized between Stollgasse and Christian-Broda-Platz on Mariahilfer Straße and is planned for the night of June 13th to 14th, 2023. With this redesign, bicycle traffic is significantly relieved, since the route is shortened from 400 to 250 meters and cyclists now have to accept less traffic lights. The redesign should not significantly impair urban traffic, as the mobility councilor Ulli Sima (SPÖ) assures. Colored concrete control walls will protect the cyclists from car traffic, which should ensure more secure use. Currently, cycling girves are forced to cross the new building belt on the crossings Felberstraße and Mariahilfer Straße twice, which leads to considerable delays. The redesign on the belt is part of a more comprehensive offensive through which Vienna has implemented almost 200 cycle path projects since 2021. In this legislative period, the city has invested almost 130 million euros in the expansion of the bike paths, with the aim of realizing a total of 100 kilometers of new cycling infrastructure.
