Traffic report: Clepch at the car seat between city and country grows

The gap between urban and rural car seat is becoming increasingly clearer according to current data. In most larger cities in Austria, the number of cars per 1,000 inhabitants has dropped in recent years. In contrast, the rural area shows an increase in the car seat. An outstanding example is the city of Waidhofen an der Thaya, where there is the highest density of cars.

In the Vienna Margaret district, the ratio with 260 cars per 1,000 inhabitants is lowest, which corresponds to a decline compared to 267 in 2022. In stark contrast to this, Waidhofen on the Thaya with 767 cars per 1,000 inhabitants has a significant increase in the same period (760 in 2022). Other Viennese districts, such as Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus and Brigittenau, also have fewer than 300 cars each.

Mobility study of the VCÖ

According to an analysis of the Verkehrsclub Austria (VCÖ), it can be seen that the motorization rate drops in all in all state capitals, with the exception of the smaller iron city. With 437 cars per 1,000 people, Innsbruck has the lowest number of Vienna, followed by Graz with 470, Linz with 502 and city of Salzburg with 511 cars. According to the latest statistics, the Austria-wide car motorization degree is 566.

With regard to these developments, the VCÖ from the Federal Government and the state governments calls for the offer to improve public transport. A low level of motorization should be seen as a positive sign: it indicates that various mobility options for the population are available and that schools, shops and leisure facilities can also be easily reached on foot or by bike, explains VCÖ expert Michael Schwendinger.

In rural regions, however, reality often looks different. Here the range of public transport is often inadequate, so that many people are still dependent on cars. Examples from Lower Austria illustrate this phenomenon: In cities such as Wiener Neustadt, St. Pölten and Krems, fewer than 600 cars come to 1,000 people, while more than 700 vehicles of 1,000 inhabitants are registered in the rural forest districts.

These discrepant numbers show that there are urgent need for action in many regions to improve mobility and transport connections. A well -developed public transport system could reduce the dependence on the car and enable the residents more freedom to choose their means of transport. More details and more precise numbers can be found in the analysis of the VCÖ, which deals intensively with the current mobility trends, as well as noe.orf.at .
