Students explore Roman history: Excursion to Carnuntum

d students of the fifth grades of the Waidhofen high school experienced an exciting day in the archaeological park Carnuntum, accompanied by their teachers Dietmar Hochfellner and Verena Brunner. The excursion offered them the opportunity to explore the impressive ruins and to learn more about the history of the Roman Danubeetropolis.

The group started their trip with the visit of the paganor and the amphitheater, where they received fascinating insights into the gladiator fights and the sports culture at the time. The amphitheater, as a place of spectacular struggles and public events, is a central element of Roman history in this region. Then the path led through the civil city, in which numerous remains of old buildings, such as the thermal system, could be visited a magnificent city villa and the residence of a cloth and oil dealer. These sights give a deep insight into the everyday life of the former residents of Carnuntum.

The second part of the excursion included an informative tour of the Carnuntinum Museum. Here the students learned a lot about the way of life of the Roman population and the importance of the city on the strategically important Danube border. Compensable exhibits and descriptive representations brought the past closer to the students and promoted a deeper understanding of the cultural roots of Austria.

In order to consolidate what they have learned, the pupils will create posters in class. These are intended to illustrate the most important sights of Carnuntum and to bring the value of the historical site close to the other classes. The initiative to process this content creatively helps to keep the knowledge of Roman history alive.

Overall, the trip to Carnuntum was not only instructive, but also an important experience for the young people who were able to gain a new look at their cultural history. Such excursions are important to arouse interest in history and to promote understanding of your own roots. In the future, the students will return to their everyday school life with a broader understanding of the historical importance of their region.
