Increasing sickness rates in Lower Austria: flu wave approaching!
The current sick leave figures in Lower Austria show a worrying increase: from the first to the fifth calendar week of 2025, sick notes rose from 33,793 to an impressive 55,199. However, there was a slight decrease to 52,340 sick notes during the semester break. These figures come from the current statistics from the Austrian Health Insurance Fund and show that the wave of illnesses is primarily caused by flu infections and influenza, while Covid-19 cases are no longer taken into account as a reportable illness, which influences the general figures. The total reports across Austria at this time were 299,595, compared to 306,124 in the previous year, as on the information portal NÖN.at is reported.
Vigilance for flu season
The data shows that despite a decrease compared to the previous year, the numbers for flu-like infections are significantly higher than in the previous year compared to the semester holidays. “We are heading towards the peak of the flu season,” warns Andreas Krauter, chief physician at the Austrian Health Insurance Fund. He emphasizes the importance of flu vaccinations and general hygiene measures such as regular hand washing and ventilating rooms to minimize the risk of infection. The circulating virus strains A(H1N1)pdm09 and Influenza B(Victoria), which are contained in the vaccinations, are particularly in focus NÖN.at additionally noted.
The current numbers and recommendations underscore the need to remain vigilant to prevent further infections during flu season. Health-conscious behaviors, including a balanced diet, adequate sleep and regular exercise in the fresh air, are also recommended to strengthen the immune system.
