Future of Christianity: Lecture series at the Academy am Cathedral in Vienna

As part of a new series of lectures, the Viennese “Akademie am Dom” focuses on the future of Christianity, which is repeatedly questioned in both Europe and worldwide. The series offers six exciting events in November and December, which are critical of various aspects of faith.

The lecture series starts on November 20 at 4 p.m. with the renowned Viennese philosopher and theologian Prof. Johann Schelkshorn, who will talk about the "reasonable faith". In this lecture, he aims to illuminate the essential connections between faith and elementary social values such as science, human rights and democracy. According to his analysis, Christianity must face these challenges so as not to end as a "sect" and to present a potential threat to the liberal constitutional state.

variety of perspectives

The first evening is supplemented by Prof. Roland Cerny-Werner at 6 p.m. His topic "Against reason? Church historiography in the 19th century" will uncover how Christianity has moved away from initial rational agreement and instead uses a supposed ideal figure of the Middle Ages to gain security.

The lecture series will continue on November 27th, with Prof. Schelkshorn on the subject of "Prophetic faith:" I wish a poor church for the poor "(Pope Francis)". As a result, P. Franz Helm offers his contribution with the title "Dialog and Prophetie at the side of the poor" at 6 p.m. He will investigate whether the church loses profile and relevance in its message if it takes the identity of each individual seriously.

Another date is December 4, where two lectures also take place. First of all, Prof. Schelkshorn will shed light on the topic "Faith in Interreligious openness", followed by Robert Wurzrainer, who deals with the "religious diversity in Austria" at 6 p.m.

All lectures are not only accessible on site, but also online, which enables broader participation. This initiative offers the participants the opportunity to deal with the current challenges and opportunities of faith and to hear different perspectives.
