West route: Fully passable again from December - vigilance in 2025 necessary
A joyful news for all commuters: the western route, a decisive part of the Austrian rail network, will be fully accessible from mid -December. This new development is followed by the considerable damage caused by floods in the Eastern region, which led to an unprecedented failure of the railway offers.
The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) announced details on the gradual restart of the west route in a press conference on Thursday. The "old" western route has been in operation again on two tracks since October 10, 2024. From November 4 and 9, 2024, the commuting trains between Tullnerfeld and Vienna as well as the trains of the S80 line should also run again. The complete operation of the "new" west route is planned for December 15, 2024, which is a relief for many commuters.
damage and investment
The flood has caused damage to the infrastructure of an estimated 100 million euros. This affects both passenger and freight transport, which has also reduced by a few million euros. ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä expressed his thanks to the passengers for their patience and understanding in this difficult time. "From December 15th we can secure Christmas trips at speeds of up to 230 km/h and at the same time fully implement our new timetable for 2025," said Matthä.
In addition, Judith Engel , director of ÖBB-Infrastructure AG, that urgently needed spare parts had to be procured in various federal states to repair the western route. At the Tullnerfeld train station, the company is initially resumed in a reduced state. The platforms for the announced commuting to Vienna were released, but no barrier -free access is possible until further notice, since there are structural damage to the lifts.
repair work and future locking
The maintenance of the company -important systems in the Lainz tunnel and in the Hadersdorf knot is carried out by November 4, 2024, which enables the route to be restored. In the Atzenbrugger tunnel, the exchange of technical components are necessary after cleaning in order to enable the trains of up to 230 km/h from mid -December.
It is important to note that a four -week lock of the new western route is expected to be planned in mid -2025. This measure serves to carry out final repair work and will lead to the fact that trains have to be temporarily redirected via the old western route.
