New sports talent classes: Education and competitive sports combined in St. Pölten

The Mary Ward Schools in St. Pölten have expanded their educational offer and now offer special support for competitive sports talents. This initiative was officially announced on October 17, 2024 and affects both high school and middle school. At the beginning of the new semester, special “sports talent classes” were set up in both types of school, which are aimed at children and adolescents between the ages of 10 and 14. This new development is implemented in cooperation with the Lower Austrian Sport performance center St. Pölten.

The introduction of these sports branches from the 5th school level enables students to perform top performance both in their sporting fields and to manage school requirements. According to the Vosö managing director Martha Mikulka, the need for such support became clear, since many young people and their parents often reach their limits when trying to combine school and sport. She emphasized that these innovative educational concepts, which are part of the religious tradition, want to react to the challenges of today.

professional support for young talents

The new program attaches great importance to a professional training environment that includes various areas such as sports science, physiotherapy, nutrition, sports psychology and sports medicine. These measures should not only support the young talents, but also accompany their legal guardians in order to promote optimal development.

The interest in this new offer was extremely large, according to the school management of Mary Ward, AHS director Ulrike Zirbs and middle school director Christian Geppner. The feedback from students and parents was consistently positive. This creates an integrative framework that focuses not only on academic achievements, but also sporting talents.

The opening of these special classes is therefore an important step in order to meet the increased demands on young people who want to be successful both school and sporty. At a time when pressure pressure can be felt on different levels, the Mary Ward schools offer a supportive space for a holistic development of the students.
