Flood damage: St. Pölten fights with billions of billions!

The consequences of the devastating flood in September 2024 can still be felt in St. Pölten and the surrounding area, and the damage sums are remarkable. The sports center in Lower Austria, which was hit hard, requires extensive repairs that the state government estimates at 4.2 million euros. This includes the NV Arena and all rooms where the water damage left massive damage and even caused mold formation. Franz Stocher, managing director of the sports center, emphasizes that urgently needed sports halls will be available again shortly, even if the cloakrooms still have to follow in the next wave of renovation. Nowadays, containers are set up on the site to provide the necessary changing rooms and therapy rooms, while training continues to remain possible, as reported by

The persistent damage assessment

The Economic Research Institute (WIFO) estimated the total damage from the disaster to dizzying 1.3 billion euros, while the municipal damage reaches 77 million euros. The priority is currently on the restoration of critical infrastructures. The Traisen Water Association has specified damage of around two million euros for the flood protection systems alone. The rail infrastructure, especially that of the Mariazellerbahn, is also repaired due to a damage of 12.4 million euros. The repair costs on the western route could be around 100 million euros, whereby the route in spring has to be closed again for four weeks in order to complete the work, such as NÖN reported.
