traffic safety in focus

The situation on the streets is observed not only in Austria, but also nationwide. Data on the traffic safety situation are obtained by official statistics such as road traffic accident statistics to create the basis for measures in legislation, traffic education, in road construction and vehicle technology. These surveys include extensive information on various accident events and causes, which facilitates the development of effective security strategies. According to the statistics of a Federal Statistical Office, accidents are analyzed in detail and serve as the basis for state transport policy.

The Federal Institute for Roads (BAST) has also established various traffic safety indicators (SPI) for a differentiated illustration of the security situation in road traffic. In an analysis carried out in 24 countries, there was great heterogeneity with regard to the implementation of the SPI and its influence on traffic safety strategies. The aim is to learn more about how vehicle technology and infrastructure can contribute to improving traffic safety, for example through innovative technologies and assistance systems. Among other things, factors such as the perception of the traffic climate and driving behavior under the influence of alcohol are considered, as in a report of the BAST.
