Melk climate: Young people shape the future in the sign of change
In autumn 2024, the city of Melk took the Initiative to actively act against the consequences of climate change. After an intensive summer has passed with extensive planning, there are now exciting projects that focus on community action.
A central aspect of this initiative is the “Climate Council Melk” project, which was well received in the city's schools. Young people of the middle school and the abbey high school have developed creative ideas for adapting to climate change through workshops. These suggestions were then sent in letters to Mayor Patrick Strobl so that the voice of the youth is heard.
precaution check in the focus
Another important step is the precaution check, which is carried out by the Energy and Environment Agency in Lower Austria. Together with representatives of blue light organizations and the federal army, experts analyzed potential dangers and risks for the city of Melk. Mayor Patrick Strobl describes this process as valuable because it enables targeted precautionary measures and better prepare for climate change.
The citizen survey, which took place from August to mid -September 2024, also collected data on climate adjustment. Although participation in the survey was limited, the results flow into future planning.
ecological development as a goal
A focus of the city of Melk is on the ecological design of the business park. This is done in collaboration with Ecoplus, which will soon carry out an event on this topic. In this way, innovative, sustainable approaches should be presented in order to make the location future -proof. The latest state of technological and ecological developments is treated to ensure an environmentally friendly orientation.
The clear! Manager Monika Wimmer has the task of checking all the ideas collected and adding to a catalog of measures for Melk, which is to be completed by the end of 2024. The implementation of the first suggestions, such as an interactive card that shows shady places and drinking water withdrawal points in Melk, is already planned for spring 2025.
On November 27, 2024, an expert lecture will take place as part of the project. Dr. Bernhard Scharf will illuminate current challenges of climate change and put possible possible solutions for discussion. The event will be held in the Melk Kulturwerkstatt carpentry, admission is at 6:30 p.m.
