Exercise at Voestalpine: Fire brigade masters simulated steel disaster
On the factory premises of the Voestalpine, there was an impressive exercise that revolved around a fictional damage event. The Situation was tense: a technical defect had led to the fact that liquid steel was released from a melting furnace. In order to intensify the challenge, the emergency services found that two employees were not at the intended collection site. This made a caustic necessary and increased the urgency of the use.
Around 50 firefighters, including members of the Traisen company fire brigade, the volunteer fire brigade (FF) Traisen Markt, FF Eschenau and FF Rotheau, were available under the command of operations manager Stefan Fingerlos. The emergency services started with eight different vehicles to cope with the crisis. The exercise was organized by Gerald Reiter and Jürgen Eder, the commander and his deputy of the Traisen company fire brigade, who had worked out the scenarios in detail.
result and knowledge of the exercise
After about an hour of intensive work, the practice goal could be achieved. The emergency services were able to master the difficult situation and to coordinate the necessary measures for human rescue and to contain the damage. The knowledge gained is now integrated into the existing operational plans in order to make future operations even more effective.
This exercise not only tested the practical operational readiness of the firefighters, but also demonstrated how important regular training in danger is. The teams weld together such operations and promote the knowledge of critical use scenarios, which can be essential in an emergency.
