Protection forest week: Our important green lifesaver in the Lilienfeld district

The topic of the protective forest has a high priority in Austria, which is underlined by the official introduction of the "Week of the Protection Forest" by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. In a country that is largely mountainous, the protective forest plays an indispensable role to secure the settlement areas of the population. This is particularly important in the Lilienfeld district, where almost 78 percent of the area is forested anyway. Here around 27 percent of these forests are specifically shown as protective forests that offer protection against natural hazards like avalanches.

In order to underline the value of these forests, section manager Christian Amberger from the torrent building emphasizes that a stable and healthy protection forest is not a matter of course. Factors such as aging the trees, a lack of rejuvenation and the influences of climate change affect the forest. Therefore, area economic projects are initiated that combine both forestry and technical measures. At the moment, the focus is on the already advanced avalanche protection measures in Annaberg and the protective measures at the Zögersbach in Lilienfeld.

The role of the protective forest

The protective forest not only has a calming effect on the landscape, but also fulfills important functions. The forests protect against harmful environmental influences and help store rainwater and prevent slips. The legal basis for these protective functions is anchored in the forest law. The protective forest acts as a natural barrier against impending dangers caused by extreme weather conditions or slopes that become unstable in precipitation.

A significant part of the protective forests is located in the municipalities of St. Aegyd am Neuwalde, Türnitz, Kleinzell, Hohenberg and Annaberg, as well as in the district capital. With a forest that extends over around 72,500 hectares, Lilienfeld has certainly been appointed as the most forested district in Lower Austria. While the importance of these forests increases, maintenance and care requires special attention so that they can continue to offer their vital protection.

The "Week of the Protection Forest" is therefore not only a simple event date, but also a call for awareness of consciousness on the indispensable role of the forests in our environment. The ongoing and planned measures are carefully monitored by those responsible in the region to ensure that the protective forests can continue to do their essential service in the future. The efforts of the Federal Ministry and the regional actors are decisive for the long -term health of these forests, which secure people and the infrastructure.
