Lower Austria's cultural economy: 25 years full of inspiration and success!
The Lower Austrian Cultural Economy (NÖKU) celebrates an important anniversary: On March 26, 2025, the 25th anniversary of the cultural management model is celebrated. Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner emphasizes the role of art and culture in Lower Austria, which serve as an inspiration and strength source for the region. Nöku has around 1.1 million visitors every year and combines around 40 artistic and scientific institutions with national and international claim.
The Festival Grafenegg, the St. Pölten Festival House and the Landesgalerie Lower Austria in Krems include the Squiping facilities of the NÖKU. The 25th anniversary was celebrated today with a symposium on the topic "How much utopia does art need?-New narrative and the rediscovery of the province". Mikl-Leitner emphasizes the freedom of art and the important role of the NÖKU, which creates optimal framework for artists.
celebrations and discussions
As part of the symposium, renowned keynote speakers such as the author Florence Gaub and Tulga Beyerle, director of the Museum of Art and Trade in Hamburg, presented her perspectives on the art landscape. In addition, a panel discussion with well -known participants such as journalist Jens Blazer and journalists Ingrid Brodnig took place. Jonathan Fine from the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the writer Julia Jost and Marie Kreutzer, a well -known film director, were also able to contribute to the conversations. In a second round of discussion, Bettina Hering (dramaturge), Thomas D. Drummer (director Kunsthaus Bregenz) and the musician Mira Lu Kovacs were on stage. Managing Director Paul Gessl emphasized the goal of the NÖKU to focus on the common one and create added value from diversity. This is particularly important because Lower Austria was still in the cultural shadow of Vienna 25 years ago and is now considered a recognized cultural land.
economic importance
The NÖKU group has been pursuing a privately oriented public-private partner-sail model in cultural management since 1999. This model has proven to be successful and promotes economically sustainable structures and professional cultural management, which guarantees planning security. With over 1,300 employees, Nöku is a not insignificant employer in the region.
In 2023, the NÖKU companies counted impressive 1.1 million visitors. To do this, around 1,870 own events that attracted around 421,000 visitors, as well as around 100 exhibitions, which attracted around 706,000 people, contribute significantly. This once again shows the dynamic and lively art and cultural scene that Lower Austria has to offer.
