Film Days in Lower Austria: Documentary films about hunger, rights and solutions
In the coming weeks, from October 16 to November 24, 2024, the film days "Hunger.Marter.Marter.profite." in Lower Austria. This event will be held around the World Nutrition Day on October 16 and addresses the pressing problems of global food production. In several cinemas in Waidhofen an der Ybbs, Horn, Krems and Mank, documentaries are shown that not only show the challenges, but also offer potential solutions. The films illuminate the problems caused by large corporations, which often drive indigenous communities from their country. The documentary “Powerlands” in particular impressively conveys the resistance of these peoples and documents its strength. Lukas Schmidt, Managing Director of Fian Austria, explains that it is essential to establish legal regulations to protect the rights of the indigenous population.
Another film, "Share", illuminates the principles of solidarity agriculture, which recommends a return to sustainable cultivation methods. "This concept not only strengthens the community, but also promotes climate protection," notes Elisabeth Jost from Fian Austria.
A critical point is also how large corporations take control of seeds and means of production. "The Last Seed" shows the dangers that result from patented hybrid seeds for small farmers in countries such as South Africa and Tanzania. Tina Wirnsberger, project coordinator of Fian Austria, explains that rural seed systems are an important resource for sustainable agriculture.
The situation in the Alps is also treated. The film "Alpenland" impressively shows the challenges with which local farmers are faced with and illuminates the influence of climate change and mass tourism. Lisa Rienesl from ÖBV- via Campesina Austria emphasizes how important a representative representative is for small and mountain farmers.
The program contains several film screenings, including "Alpenland" on October 16 in Waidhofen/Ybbs, "The Last Seed" in Horn on October 17, "Powerlands" in Krems on October 23 and "Harvest" in Man on October 24th. Ticket prices are set to € 9.50 for regular cards, with discounts for young people, students and seniors.
