The municipal council in Horn emerges in the case of refugee decisions out of conviction

In the picturesque Horn, Ukrainian refugees found refuge in a building on Seestrasse 31. This building, which belongs to the wife of the FDP councilor Beda Fischer, has been a place to stay for the refugees who fled their homeland before the war. Mayor Thierry Kurtzemann emphasizes that the decision to offer the accommodation there was made for practical reasons. "It is the cheapest solution for us, otherwise we should have rented many apartments," explains Kurtzemann.

This is a precaution to rule out possible conflicts of interest, even if the municipal council decisions are public. Kurtzemann assures: "We have no concerns about a favor."

The decision to accommodate the refugees in this building fell in February 2022, when the community quickly searched for a solution, since the other accommodation on Grünastrasse was already fully occupied. "It is very difficult to find suitable apartments because many landlords do not want to accept refugees. We are happy about this solution," added Kurtzemann.

The backgrounds are complex. Migration to Switzerland, triggered by the war in Ukraine, presents the communities of new tasks. There is a clear need for accommodations, which, however, often affects difficulties in providing. Despite these challenges, the municipality of Horn is pragmatic and tries to find a good solution for the refugees in this critical period.

The rental conditions and the location of the accommodation offer the municipality a certain flexibility in the administration of refugee care. Fischer and Kurtzemann agree that the current solution makes both economic sense and that the needs of the refugees meet. This proactive attitude could serve as an example for other communities that face similar challenges.

The case of Horn also raises questions: Where will the search for suitable accommodations for refugees in the future?
