Weleda opens climate -neutral logistics center in Schwäbisch Gmünd!

Weleda has built a new logistics center in Schwäbisch Gmünd, which is characterized by high sustainability. The new building is pre-certified with the DGNB standard platinum and will be CO₂-neutral in the operation, among other things through the use of geothermal energy and solar power. The main materials of the building are natural materials that promote an environmentally friendly construction.

The logistics center consists of three construction bodies: a high -bay warehouse, a production building and an administration building. The high -bay warehouse, which at 81 x 38 meters represents the largest coherent standard powers in Germany, offers space for 17,200 pallets and enables daily deliveries in 47 countries. The total area of the property is 72,000 m², of which only 20 % were built on, while the remaining areas were renatured and designed with domestic plants and orchards.

renewable energies and biodiversity

The energy supply of the logistics center takes place entirely through renewable energies. For this purpose, 48 geothermal probes and around 10,000 photovoltaic modules were installed, which generate around 1.3 GWh of electricity annually and thus save around 207 tons of CO₂. The higher construction costs, which are incurred due to the waiver of fossil fuels, are estimated at around 50 %, with amortization in 12 to 14 years.

The building does not require heating or cooling to store temperature -sensitive products, which further increases energy efficiency. The outdoor facilities of the campus were designed so that biodiversity is promoted, with orchards, domestic plants and nesting boxes. With this project, Weleda not only pursues the goal of sustainable building, but also an ecological upgrading of the former agricultural site.

In addition, Weleda ensures that employees: inside have a right to co -determine when designing the work environment. The campus was realized in close cooperation with various partner companies, such as Michelgroup GmbH for the design of the buildings and transsolar for energy technology and sustainability planning. The completion of the logistics center is intended for 2024, and the entire building is 100 % supplied with renewable energies, which should lead to an active contribution to climate protection, as [detail] reported. The Cradle Campus is an example of innovative and sustainable industrial architecture, as [Polis Award] noticed.
