600 kilos of cannabis at Vienna Airport: International smuggling networks exposed
At the Vienna-Schwechat Airport, an impressive 600 kilograms of cannabis herb were confiscated during current controls. This measure followed intensive investigations that concentrated on the smuggling of drugs from Thailand to Europe. The findings are part of a larger trend that affects drug trafficking at numerous European airports.
The State Police Directorate Lower Austria announced that 21 suspects between the ages of 20 and 54 were arrested and admitted to the Korneuburg judge. This operation was the result of months of cooperation between the city police command Schwechat, the Federal Criminal Police Office and customs that have been working on the investigation of the international smuggling smuggling since July last year.
Investigations and perpetrator scheme
The use of detection dogs during the controls turned out to be extremely effective. According to reports, the alleged smugglers were recruited via special internet forums in which rewards of several thousand euros were offered. Interestingly, the clients are also said to have given a “guarantee of success”, which further increased the incentive for those involved. The investigation into the backers of the smuggling continues to run.
The sudden increase in the identified drug smuggling tests is associated with the legalization of the cannabis cultivation in Thailand. This development led to an oversupply, which significantly dropped the prices for cannabis cabbage. The police explain that despite these developments, profits in trading with this so -called "light" drug can be enormous. This has stormed crime in this area and led to a real boom of the smuggling. According to the information from the police, this trend will continue to stop in the future, as more and more perpetrators will become aware of the lucrative business.
