In the Baden-Baden City Library, there will be an impressive lecture on Wednesday, October 16, which deals with the role and perspective of African women in literature. From 7 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. Felix and Sika Aithnard will talk about the topic of “female singularity and plural gaze-African women's perspectives from the 18th century to the present.
The focus of the lecture is two important novels: "Exercise" by Yaa Gyasi and "Only part of you" by SEFI Atta. Yaa Gyasi takes the audience on a literary journey from Ghana in the 18th century to the modern USA. Sefi Atta, on the other hand, illuminates the life of a successful African auditor who commutes between London and Lagos and describes the challenges and joys of their emancipated existence.
the speakers and their mission
Felix and Sika Aithnard have been committed to the mediation of African literature since 2020 by their “Bridge Mauer of Hope”. You have already donated many books from African authors to the city library. As part of the “African literatures” series of events, they present these works to a broader public and thus contribute to promoting cultural exchange.
The event is organized by the Baden-Baden Library Society e.V. and receives support from state funds from the workplace for literary museums in Baden-Württemberg and the German Literature Archives in Marbach. Participation is free of charge and registration is not necessary, which makes the event particularly accessible.
In a time when diversity and different perspectives in literature are becoming increasingly important, this lecture is a valuable opportunity to deal with the voices of African women and to discover their stories.
