The community of Salesian Don Boscos in Amstetten mourns Father Johann Kiesling, who recently died in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Known for his tireless efforts in Africa, Father Kiesling devoted himself to the orphans and street children in one of the poorest regions of the continent. Despite several malaria diseases, he put his well -being in the back to help the needy people
Kiesling had expressed the intimate wish that his projects and auxiliary initiatives would continue after his death. Provincial P. Siegi Kettner was concerned about the loss of a "giants of humanity". The deceased often visited Amstetten and reported in services of his work, which were regularly supported by the Don Bosco Mission Austria.

Father Johann Kiesling was born on July 16, 1934 in Grafendorf, southern Moravia. After his expulsion in 1945, he first lived in Lower Austria and Vienna, where he came into contact with the Salesians for the first time. In 1959 he entered the order and was ordained a priest in 1966. His dream of missionary work in Africa fulfilled in 1982 when he was sent to the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he lived until his death.
In the Congo, Father Kiesling worked with exceptional dedication, often in the most remote regions and in times of war and conflicts. He was called "Père Johann" by the locals and was known for his deep solidarity with the poor rural population. He was not only a priest, but also a fountain builder and organizer who drove the construction of schools, orphanages and medical stations. In addition, he often brought seriously ill people from remote villages to medical care.

In his homeland Austria, Father Kiesling was estimated as a sought -after preacher and donation collector for various missions. He kept close contact with his family and the Salesians as well as former students and compatriots. For his achievements, he was awarded the "Austria.On Mission Award" on May 3, 2022, presented by Missio National Director Father Karl Wallner in a ceremony with high-ranking church representatives.
The Don Bosco Mission Austria, through which Father Kiesling was able to implement many projects, recognized his work in the highest tones. "For us, Father Kiesling was a great missionary and loyal project partner who moved a lot for the people of the Congo. He was a father, brother, friend and a real son of Don Boscos," explain the mission responsible. This confirmation shows how much his work influenced the quality of life of many people.
