New project Mission Biodiversity: Diversity for our agriculture!

Wieselburg, Österreich - On May 19, 2025, a new educational offer on the subject of biodiversity in agriculture was presented. The “Mission Biodiversity” project is aimed at trainees and presents its content at the trade fair for Land-Forst-Hunter in Wieselburg, which takes place from May 22nd to 24th. The initiative was developed by the Environmental Dach Association, the University of Agriculture and Environmental Education, Polygon Media and Studio PESC and is financed by the federal government and the European Union. The aim of the project is to create a playful access to biodiversity in agricultural training and further education.

The innovative approach includes a digital game for smartphones that leads users into five different worlds: fields, grassland, farm, forest and water edge. A total of 16 levels are available in which the players explore important biodiversity aspects. They are accompanied by an avatar called "Grünhild". Players learn through flake flowers and managed forests as well as the economic success, which can be achieved through a higher biodiversity. In the last level, the participants have to examine a real agricultural company and create a portrait of the farm. These are then published on the project website in order to present the flagships of a biodiversity -friendly agriculture. At the end of the game, the participants receive a certificate. For more information and press photos, the website Missionbiodiversity.Umweltdachverband.at is available.

teaching modules for biodiversity

In addition to the playful approach, there are new teaching modules that are provided by the Federal Agency for Nature and Environmental Protection and the Federal Center for Agriculture. These building blocks deal with essential issues on biodiversity and their importance for agriculture. The teaching component "Biodiversity on arable land" conveys the students agriculture practices such as sowing drings and bird protection measures. Furthermore, the resilience of grassland and adaptation options are discussed in the "Biodiversity" building block.

Another component deepens the connection between biodiversity and the performance of agricultural businesses and offers practices to increase biodiversity, including gentle management processes and the creation of flower and edge strips. These materials are available free of charge via the BLE media service and can also be downloaded from the educational server "Agrar" for general education schools and agricultural technical schools.

The role of biodiversity in agriculture

biodiversity is a central component of biological cultivation and essential for the promotion of sustainable agriculture. Bio -farms offer more space for different species thanks to a variety of biodiversity areas and location. Greater biodiversity leads to increased ecosystem services that help companies reduce the use of insecticides. Pollers, beneficiaries and decompositions benefit particularly from biological cultivation.

Different cultivation systems, including one-year crops, wine and fruit growing as well as permanent grassland, show varying potential to promote biodiversity. The combined approach of organic cultivation and nature conservation measures can offer additional synergies to support biodiversity. This not only contributes to the stability of the agricultural production systems, but also increases their resilience compared to climatic changes, as the facts about biodiversity explains.

Overall, these initiatives illuminate the growing importance of biodiversity in agriculture, which promises both ecological and economic advantages and can thus make a significant contribution to sustainable development.
