New walking and cycle path in Roseldorf: More security for all road users!
Roseldorf, Österreich - On May 27, 2025, a new walking and cycle path in Roseldorf was inaugurated in order to significantly improve traffic safety in the region. National Councilor Christian Lausch, together with Mayor Ing. Florian Hinteregger and Di Christof Dauda, handed over the project, which was realized by the market town of Sitzendorf an der Schmida. The project was supported by the cycle path funding of the state of Lower Austria. The new WEG relocates bicycle traffic from the busy state road B 2, on which around 3,200 vehicles are traveling every day, to a significantly safer route.
The walking and cycle path is around 370 meters long and begins at the western start of Roseldorf. It runs south of the B 2 to the intersection with the L 1146. The width of the path varies between 2.3 and 3.3 meters, depending on the local conditions, and includes various structural measures so that the safety of the user is guaranteed. This includes the construction of high, deep and sloping bricks as well as a newly built reinforced concrete bridge of about 10 meters in length for crossing the Schmida.
traffic safety for cyclists and pedestrians
The Newly Implemented Weg offers a secure connection to everyday and leisure facilities in Sitzendorf, including the community center, a kindergarten, schools, local suppliers and sports facilities. There is also a direct connection to the regional cycling route "Riesling". This project is an important step in promoting cycling and increasing traffic safety in the region.
The topic of security on walking and cycle paths is particularly relevant because common paths can often lead to conflicts. Cyclists are often exposed to bending and pedestrians, while pedestrians can be endangered by cyclists. The bicycle amendment from 2021 has led to the creation of clear regulations for the use of common walking and cycle paths, whereby cyclists are only subject to use under certain conditions, unless the condition of the path is unreasonable. In urban areas, these paths are only permitted in exceptional cases so as not to endanger pedestrians.
new traffic rules offer additional security
In this context, new traffic regulations for cyclists and pedestrians in Austria, presented by Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler, also have the potential to further increase traffic safety. The safety distance when overtaking cyclists was set at at least 1.5 meters in the local area and two meters on country roads, which could significantly increase the safety of cyclists.
The new rules also allow the right turn to red under certain conditions and allow cyclists to drive in groups of at least ten cyclists at red, as long as the first cyclist stands and the group secures. Furthermore, pedestrian -friendly traffic lights should offer longer green phases for pedestrians and restrict the ban on the disability of pedestrians to walkers.
With these measures and the new walking and cycle path in Roseldorf, a valuable contribution to improving traffic safety for all street users is made. The total costs of the project amount to around 500,000 euros, with 70% of the financing of Lower Austria and 30% being borne by the Sitzendorf market town on Schmida.
