Munich celebrates: LMU and TUM receive seven clusters of excellence!

München, Deutschland - The Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU) has received all seven clusters requested in a significant success as part of the federal and state excellence strategy. This was announced on May 22, 2025, and the funding will be granted for seven years from January 1, 2026. LMU President Prof. Dr. Bernd Huber emphasizes the technical width of the university and the commitment of the researchers, while the future President Prof. Matthias Tschöp emphasizes the strategic vision and performance of the LMU. Bavaria's Minister of Science Markus Blume called the success "gigantic" and underlined the role of Munich as a central excellence location.

In addition to the new cluster applications, the number of Bavarian clusters doubles to twelve, since the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is also successful. All applications from the Bavarian universities have been approved, and the TUM can show three new clusters of excellence in the areas of nucleic acid research, biosystem design and social transformation through technologies within this success. The TUM is thus well positioned in the federal and state excellence strategy and continues its previous success by promoting four existing clusters again - this in the areas of energy change, quantum technologies, neurological diseases and the development of the universe.

research focus of the excellence cluster

The approved LMU clusters deal with particularly relevant research topics that address current social challenges. The focus includes:

  • Cross-Cultural Philology : Examination of philological practices over 5,000 years with the focus on cultural understanding.
  • nucleate : research on DNA and RNA structures for medical applications, interdisciplinary.
  • biosystem : Development of biological systems according to engineering principles, with the aim of new medical applications.
  • mcQst : research on quantum science and technologies, promotion of young scientists.
  • Origins : Research in the origin of life and universe in cooperation with several institutions.
  • synergy : research into neurological diseases and development of new therapies.
  • e-conversion : basic research on the energy conversion and development of sustainable solutions.

The way to excellence

The excellence strategy was introduced in its current form 2018, after a careful assessment by international panels. From 195 proposals, 88 were selected for funding. The LMU and the TUM had submitted each seven applications in this last selection process, with six of these applications in cooperation, which underlines the close cooperation between the two Munich universities.

The decision to promote the clusters was seen as a significant step for the positioning of the Bavarian universities in international comparison. In this context, Bavaria's Minister of Science Markus Blume described Munich as a true “Excellence Mecca”. The success of the LMU and TUM are not only a profit for the universities themselves, but also a positive impulse for the entire region that will benefit from the innovative research results.
